A relic of 1970s “new formalist” architecture – imposing, monolithic, and concrete-heavy – there’s no question that the Detective Building stands out in East Liberty. With 21,000 square feet of coworking, meeting, and office space spread across three lofty floors, Beauty Shoppe Detective Building is suitable for individuals and scaling businesses alike. And, though it is furnished and wired for 21st century work, Beauty Shoppe Detective Building is distinctly influenced by the structure’s past life. A team of designers from Schoolhouse — a lighting and homewares brand based in Portland, Oregon — meticulously reimagined the space, taking inspiration from the clean lines, vibrant upholstery, and ergonomic furniture associated with 60s and 70s office.

East Liberty is home to some of Pittsburgh’s most culturally vibrant institutions due, in large part, to neighborhood uplift that fosters community, and not an exclusive few. Polarization has occurred here, without a doubt, but credit local residents, community development corporations, and a few good listeners for their ability to arrest decline and enable the creation and maintenance of new community. Step into the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre, Ace Hotel Pittsburgh, or Kelly’s Bar and Lounge and you will learn that Pittsburgh’s cultural axis has returned to East Lib because its former residents still form the core of its social fabric.
Food & Beverage
Beauty Shoppe members will have access to The Bureau, a coffee shop conveniently located in Schoolhouse’s retail space on the ground floor of the Detective Building. Opening in fall 2018, The Bureau will serve espresso drinks and a variety of small bites.
